Why Would Anybody Want to Ski Or Snowboard Way Down South in NC?  The Answer Is Simply Because They Can!

Snow skiing in NC at Beech, Sugar, Wolf Laurel and other resorts can be fun and a great opportunity within driving distance to learn to enjoy winter sports.

Believe it or not, almost 1% of American skiers, actually snow ski in NC.  Learn why below

Our NC mountain resorts provide convenient and nearby ski instruction so Southern skiers can learn how to snow ski and board and then their future ski travel often expands to your destination ski resort in New England and out West. My question is, we know this happens all the time because we can't compete with major destination ski resorts but how can major resorts benefit from this skier transition from beginner to dedicated destination resort skier?

Asheville's Wolf Ridge and Breakaway ski resorts usually opens with tons of snow. Many skiers outside of Dixie up in the cold New England States or out in the powdery West would be surprised to learn that 1% of the ski visits in the United States take place in Western North Carolina. First, we have the highest mountain peaks east of the Rocky Mountains and our base elevations are usually higher than the mountain peaks of the better known ski resorts in the Mid Atlantic and New England States.

Second, our high mountains actually receive the benefit from the lake effect snows and flurries way up on the Canadian border as well as the occasional northeaster storms usually born off our Atlantic coast. Surprisingly, the Carolina ski resorts actually receive more natural snow than cities like Boston, Chicago, Denver and even Salt Lake City.

What we lack in natural snow and lose through snow melt are countered by a religious like attitude toward massive snow making capacity in order to turn this part of the South into a southern fried version  of Northern Canada in the winter time.  Finally, over 500,000 southerners ski in our high mountains because we are their first drive-to ski location on their trip North. We are convenient, close and accessible from all sections of Dixie including Florida.

No, North Carolina isn’t Whistler, Colorado, Utah or Vermont but we are a heck of a lot closer, quicker, and all without the delays and hassles of post 9/11 air travel.  Although you won’t mistake our slopes or nightlife for Whistler, Vail or even Killington our dedicated snowmakers can put down massive quantities of man made snow on verticals that reach 1,200 feet.

Come visit us here at Wolf Laurel Ski Resort, NC’s most convenient ski resort for Southern skiers, just 30 minutes by new Interstate Highway I-26 from Asheville. Our slopes are expanding, we have a new mountain top ski lodge and we are minutes away from all of the entertainment, nightlife and restaurants of Asheville. Wolf Laurel Ski Resort usually opens for skiing just after Thanksgiving and our season last until March so come by for a visit and enjoy our little piece of Canada way down south in North Carolina.

Come and ski North Carolina.
