Wolf Facts:  The Perfect 4-Season Climate

The climate of the Wolf Laurel area in the high mountains of western North Carolina is very similar to parts of Vermont and New Hampshire in New England. Weather experts tell us that for every 1,000 feet in elevation gain, the average temperature falls approximately 3 degrees. To look at the weather change another way, every 1,000 feet in elevation gain equals at move north of about 200 miles.

The elevations in this region range from 2,300 feet down in the valley at Mars Hill (home to Mars Hill College) to 5,516 on Big Bald Mountain. We also have Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountain range which peaks out at 6,684 feet above sea level, the highest mountain peak east of the Rocky Mountains.  Asheville and the French Broad River Valley lies at  2,200 feet and west of them is Roan Mountain, a favorite cross country skiing area, with a top elevation of 6,285 feet.

Although there is a relatively wide variation in temperatures due to the elevation, the annual snowfall is even more pronounced.  For the purposes of Wolf Facts, we will compute the weather here from the approximate elevation of the upper mountain ski lodge at Wolf Laurel Ski Resort and the Wolf Ridge High Mountain Resort elevation of around 4,400 feet.

Western North Carolina has long been one of the leading mountain resort areas in the nation where Southerners have second homes and vacation each year to escape the extreme hot temperatures and sweltering humidity of our region. In fact, our summer temperatures seldom exceed 80 degrees, which is perfect for outdoor activities. You can enjoy golf, tennis, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, river rafting, caving, swimming and horseback riding or relax and enjoy the views, shopping and culture of the region.  Remember though that it does get substantially warmer down the valley in Asheville where temperatures will on occasion approach 90 degrees.

Today more people are discovering the winter sports activities that are available near Wolf Laurel. Expanding downhill skiing and boarding slopes and a new mountain top ski lodge at the Wolf Laurel Ski Resort are just a few of the winter activities now available conveniently near Exit 3, less than 30 minutes north of the popular tourist city and world-class destination of Asheville, NC.   In addition, winter tubing runs, cross country skiing, sledding, snowshoeing and winter hiking fill out the outside opportunities here in the winter season.

Wolf Laurel at over 4,000 feet in elevation receives on average 65 inches of snow each year compared to only 14 inches down in Asheville.  To give you an idea of our New England style winter climate, compare this to the annual snowfall for Boston, MA -  42 inches ,    Chicago, IL - 40 inches, New York City, NY - 24 inches, and even out west in Denver, - 64 inches and   Salt Lake City, - 62 inches.

In fact, between the rustic new glass and log ski lodge and the snow covered treeless peak of Bald Mountain, you could be forgiven at first glance for thinking you had arrived in the mountains of Montana or Colorado.

The bottom line is our elevation guarantees cool temperatures during hot summer days in the south and mid-west. When you add in the long-distance views and fun mountain activities plus downtown Asheville, this area is a winning combination for mountain lovers in the eastern US.
